Vegas Aces Double Down on Success: Celebrating Back-to-Back WNBA Titles

Around 5000 fans gathered in Las Vegas on a Monday evening to commemorate the city's first dual pro sports championship. The Las Vegas Aces also became the first WNBA team in 21 years to secure back-to-back titles.

"We can't thank you enough for always being there for us, cheering us on, near and far!" WNBA Finals MVP A'ja Wilson, dressed in her signature bandana and sunglasses, said to the loud cheering crowd.

Wilson scored an average of 21.3 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game to assist the Aces in defeating the New York Liberty in four games last week.

"Winning a championship is difficult, repeating is even harder," Aces owner Mark Davis said in his acceptance speech. And Davis would know. He's been striving to bring his Raiders to a Super Bowl since he inherited the NFL team from his father in 2011.

Compact in Size, Immense in Enthusiasm

The previous year, the Aces' bus led a parade 2 miles up the Strip from Excalibur to the Bellagio after defeating the Connecticut Sun in four games. A rally then shut down traffic on both sides of Las Vegas Boulevard.

Due to preparations for the Las Vegas Grand Prix in late October, most of the Strip was taken up, so this year's parade could only be a quarter of the length. The team's bus made a left turn for a celebration at the Toshiba Plaza pedestrian mall outside T-Mobile Arena.

Despite being smaller in size, the occasion was filled with immense enthusiasm.

"We're coming back!" Wilson screamed to the fans, ensuring a third consecutive celebration rally next year. "We'll do this again!"

Why it Took Vegas so Long to Go Pro

The Aces' bus traveled just 15 minutes along a parade route from the Statue of Liberty at New York-New York, symbolizing the New York Liberty. However, in essence, it took almost a century.

For decades, there was a reticence about Las Vegas, even when smaller cities acquired their major league sports teams. The infamous casino culture Las Vegas is renowned for since 1931 and the potential for rigged matches it suggested made professional teams apprehensive about establishing themselves here.

However, after the Golden Knights NHL expansion team proved the trepidation baseless in 2017, the Silver Stars relocated to Las Vegas from San Antonio the following year and renamed themselves the Aces, capturing their first title four years later. They were joined in Vegas by the Oakland Raiders in 2020.

Now, two of Vegas' three pro teams have found themselves victorious in title events. The Knights celebrated their first Stanley Cup win at Toshiba Plaza in June.

The Aces and their coach, Becky Hammon, ride their double-decker bus into history.
