Compete for higher career advancement. - Vasilj now tops the list alongside Barbarez?
As a goalkeeper with only 1.06 goals conceded per game, Vasilj stood out as the best starter in the 2. Liga. He even managed to keep clean sheets in 10 matches. With his impressive performance and future prospects of playing in the Bundesliga, he gained fame in his hometown.
Now, Vasilj is preparing for another battle – this time against an old acquaintance. The former HSV player, Sergej Barbarez (52), has been the coach of the Bosnian national team since April. Originally from Mostar, Barbarez recently watched the St. Pauli goalkeeper and his national team teammate, Dennis Hadžikadunić (25), in action during a derby in May.
Will Vasilj be the new top choice for Barbarez?
Barbarez promised that Vasilj and Hadžikadunić would be key players for Bosnia and Herzegovina in the future. After the team missed out on qualifying for the Euros in the playoffs against Ukraine, the coach decided it was time for some changes.
The two Hamburgers were selected for the friendly matches against England (3.6. in Newcastle) and Italy (9.6. in Empoli).
Vasilj's opportunities to become the starting goalkeeper under Barbarez grew considerably because the previous number one, Ibrahim Sehic (35), announced his retirement following 55 international appearances. Vasilj had been sitting on the bench for the most part since 2021, with only 8 games to his name.
If Vasilj wants to can compete for the spot between the posts when playing against top talent in the two test matches, he will have to face off against Kenan Piric (29, Larnaca) and Osman Hadzikic (28, Velez Mostar).
