Union Forms Between Companies - Used spare parts now approved for automobile maintenance
Car insurance is experiencing rising costs and is turning to a more eco-friendly and cost-effective solution: repairing with used car parts. This option is available for cars that are between three and eight years old. Allianz, a DAX-listed company and the biggest German insurer, is leading the way, citing countries like England, the Netherlands, and France where regulations promoting the use of reusable car parts in workshops have been in place for several years now. "Everyone agrees that repairing is more eco-friendly than using new parts," said Frank Sommerfeld, head of Allianz's property insurance arm in Germany.
The used parts will be sourced from cars that have been totaled and are often sold abroad for scrap. Admittedly, used parts such as doors, front and rear gates, mirrors, headlights, and rear lights will be used for repair. However, safety-related parts like steering systems, axle parts, and wheels will not be used.
As an illustration, Sommerfeld provided an example of the repair of a VW ID.3's windshield, which would save 1,200 euros compared to installing a new windshield. The Allianz Technology Center indicates that the carbon emissions in this instance would be virtually zero, as greenhouse gases aren't emitted during the manufacture of used spare parts.
German car insurance companies have experienced increased costs for several years, and these are largely due to the high prices of new car parts. Income can no longer cover these costs, as shown by the German Insurance Association, which projects a billion-euro deficit in the automotive industry for the current year.
