USA Designates First NFL Partner as 888
888 Holdings PLC, a licensed gambling company located in Gibraltar, has become the NFL's first major sports betting partner. As a result, they have just been named the New York Jets' primary sponsor. Unfortunately, the arrangement has already sparked backlash due to NFL advertising regulations.
The vibrant orange banners and flashy signs from 888 have been waving in the wind at MetLife Stadium for weeks, but it was only officially announced on the 30th of October. This Gibraltar-based company, which originally hails from Israel and is traded on the London Stock Exchange, is now the main supporter of the well-known American football club, while simultaneously being the first significant online gambling backer of the NFL since May last year's PASPA repeal.
888 and the Jets have praised the arrangement, describing it as "historic" and "unprecedented." The 888 signage will be displayed at all Jets matches, both on the video boards within the stadium and within all highlight sequences in the "red zone," as per Yaniv Sherman, 888's Commercial Director. 888 is granted the opportunity to use the Jets' branding, including logos and various advertising materials. This applies to print, TV, radio, and online Jets advertisements as well.
Sherman claims that the objective is to "solidify the 888 brand in the US market" — 888 is currently licensed and active in New Jersey, where the Jets' stadium is situated. They also possess a partnership with the Las Vegas-based casino titan Caesars Entertainment.
The overturning of the nationwide sports betting prohibition was mainly led by the tiniest US state, New Jersey. Given this deal with the Jets, Sherman envisions "an exciting time ahead." Additionally, it is stated:
"888 possesses a unique position in the online marketplace for every regulated US state. This agreement will assist in executing our growth strategy, as 888 is slated to be a frontrunner on the rising, potentially immense US online gaming market."
Illegal Stadium Advertising?
The 888 stadium advertising has already resulted in a commotion in foreign countries. As per a report in the tabloid New York Post, the orange paint on the stadium's outer walls disobeys the NFL's fresh advertising regulations, which prohibit direct advertising for gambling websites.
It is purported that "direct advertising" applies to 888-the banners are particularly questionable considering the protection of children and young people. This is especially salient since 888 promotes not only sports betting but also its own online casino. Consequently, both gambling critics and gambling addiction researchers are troubled by this combination.
The Jets management, though, insists they have abided by the rules. However, both sides have opted not to comment further about the allegations, according to the report by NYP. It remains unclear whether this will be the end of the matter and how far NYP can take their complaints into the public and political discourse.
