"Living Freely Through Music" - US Top Diplomat Plays Guitar at Kiev Drinking Establishment
The "Barman Dictat" bar in Kiev is a hotspot, well-known for its vibrant vibe, creative shows, and live bands. On a Tuesday night, guests were unwinding, momentarily forgetting the disastrous war of aggression by the Russians, as they enjoyed the music. That is until the band made a big announcement: Anthony Blinken (62), the American Secretary of State, was in the house!
To everyone's surprise, Blinken had arrived in Kiev that morning to discuss military aid with President Volodymyr Selensky. Then, just as unexpectedly, he showed up at the "Barman Dictat" that evening. Blinken stepped onto the stage, picked up a guitar and welcomed everyone, saying:
► "I understand that this is an extremely difficult time. Your soldiers, your citizens, especially those in the northeast, in Kharkiv, are enduring immense suffering. But it's crucial for you to know that the United States is by your side, and a large part of the world is too. You're not just fighting for a free Ukraine, but also for a free world, and that free world is supporting you."
He followed this by strumming the opening chords of Neil Young's famous song "Rockin' In The Free World" and the audience was blown away! Blinken even joined in with the chorus. By performing this piece, he subtly paid tribute to the Ukrainians' fight against the Russian invasion, without drawing too much attention to himself and in an effortlessly cool fashion.
It was Blinken's fourth visit to the country. Apart from Selenskyj, he also met the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba - in a casual setting at a pizza place started by a war veteran.
