US Team Favored in Domestic Ryder Cup Betting; Europe Preferred in International Markets
The 44th Ryder Cup is all set to begin on Friday, September 29, at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy. This prestigious golf tournament sees teams from the United States and Europe go head-to-head in a series of matches.
On Friday, performances start at 1:35 am EST (7:35 am Rome time) with foursomes, also known as alternate shot, where partners take turns playing each hole. The second half of the day will consist of fourball, where each player plays their own ball and the better score is used.
After weeks of discussions about who should've made the US and European teams and debates over pairings, coaching matters, course setup, and many other issues, the golfers will finally settle these arguments through five rounds of golf.
Foregoing any changes, European Captain Luke Donald has kept the same format as the previous day. The Saturday sessions will also feature two additional matches of foursomes and fourball. Finally, on Sunday, there will be a total of 12 singles matches to conclude the Ryder Cup.
The US Team has several talented players, including Sam Burns, Patrick Cantlay, Wyndham Clark, Rickie Fowler, Brian Harman, Max Homa, Brooks Koepka, Collin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, and Justin Thomas. Captain Zach Johnson selected these players along with his captain's picks, Burns, Fowler, Koepka, Morikawa, Spieth, and Thomas, who had his fair share of controversy.
The European Team, on the other hand, includes Ludvig Aberg, Matt Fitzpatrick, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Nicolai Hojgaard, Viktor Hovland, Shane Lowry, Robert MacIntyre, Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Justin Rose, and Sepp Straka. Captain Luke Donald picked Fleetwood, Lowry, Hojgaard, Straka, Aberg, and Rose as his captain's picks.
The US Strives for a Win on Foreign Soil
The US team is determined to end its 30-year drought of winning the Ryder Cup on foreign soil. The last time the Americans achieved this was in 1993 when the US Team, led by Captain Tom Watson, won at The Belfry in England with a score of 15-13.
In contrast, Europe has successfully defended the Cup on multiple home grounds ever since. The gap between the two teams has been significant in recent years.
Since 2002, there have been only three instances of a US win in the Ryder Cup. The US emerged victorious in the biennial matches three times, with the last victory occurring at Whistling Straits in 2021, where the team dominated with a score of 19-9.
Despite being the defending champions, US bettors are slightly favoring their team at -175 (implied odds of 63.6%) at BetMGM. Meanwhile, the Europeans are considered underdogs at +175 (implied odds of 36.4%). BetMGM revealed that almost half of the money bet on the Ryder Cup has been on the US, while the Europeans account for 48% of the betting action. There's also a 1% possibility of a draw at +1200.
UK bookmakers report taking slightly more wagers on the home team as well. This resulted in lines slightly favoring the European Team, with odds of 1/1 (+100) implying a 50% chance of winning. The US team carries odds of 11/10 (+110), indicating a winning probability of about 48%.
