Central Station in Hamburg gets revamped - Urban area acquires structure to assist drug dependents.
The Hamburg social welfare department is planning to open a new facility for substance abusers and the homeless close to the main railroad station. The property where this new facility will be situated was acquired by the social enterprise Fördern und Wohnen recently. The objective is to take these vulnerable individuals off the streets and provide them with assistance. The facility is anticipated to be operational by the end of this calendar year.
As per the social welfare department, this facility is aimed at alleviating the strain on public spaces as well. The August-Bebel-Park, near the Drob Inn drug counseling centre, is thought to be a trouble area. According to Social Affairs Senator Melanie Schlotzhauer (SPD), finding a suitable property in the station's vicinity had been an ongoing endeavor. She stated: "Day and night lodging is an integral aspect of the services we aim to provide." The goal is to prevent further deterioration of the individuals in question. The number of people who can be accommodated in the six-story building has not yet been determined and relies on the layout of the facility.
Mareike Engels, Green Party's spokesperson for social policy, hailed the acquisition as an important move in tackling addiction and homelessness. She mentioned that more accessible and low-threshold care options are desperately needed around the station to significantly enhance matters, particularly in front of the Drob Inn. Furthermore, it's crucial that a separate service is established for women and that personalized help options are available.
Dennis Thering, CDU parliamentary group leader, expressed skepticism about the perceived benefits of another facility at the main station. He pointed out the growing resentment in the area: "Already, friction is being felt in terms of the non-transparent procedure, and the SPD and Greens must now quickly disclose the actual cost of purchasing the empty office building as well as any potential additional expenses related to renovations and adjustments."
Alexander Wolf, AfD parliamentary group deputy, also criticized the selection of location. "We don't require more problematic individuals at the main station," he stated, "We need fewer instead. This is a misguided and hazardous approach."
