Trial for infant death during home birth - Upon rupture of her water sac, the midwife administered globules.

Midwife Sabine D. (62), from Neustadt am Rübenberge in the Hanover region, is facing charges for negligence resulting in death. Several years ago, a previous court had sentenced her to four years in prison in this case. The judges at the time even believed it to be intentional manslaughter. However, the German Federal Court of Justice later overturned that verdict, and the case is now being retried.

Let's rewind the clock. About nine years ago, a woman was pregnant and decided to have her baby at home. But when her due date passed by six days, the top part of her amniotic sac burst, claims the prosecution. Instead of seeking medical assistance, Sabine D. allegedly only provided the mother with pills and liquid medicine.

Three days later, the mother said she could no longer feel her child's heartbeat. She and Sabine D. went together to a doctor's office to use an ultrasound machine, but it was too late. The doctor couldn't detect a heartbeat. The mother had to be taken to the hospital for an emergency delivery where she gave birth to a stillborn girl.

In the previous trial, the mother testified that she trusted the skilled midwife. Sabine D. also admitted that she should have urged the parents to go to the clinic. However, they had insisted on a home birth even when the situation turned critical.

In the ongoing trial, the former midwife remains silent about her charges. The parents of the deceased child will testify as witnesses during the next day of the trial on May 22.

Lawyer Tobias Börsch represents the parents of the stillborn child. They are taking part in the trial as joint plaintiffs
