In the recent iOS update, version 17.5, many users have noticed that photos they had deleted in the past have mysteriously reappeared on their devices. These old images show up as if they were newly added to the Photos app, leaving some people completely shocked.
One unfortunate individual shared her experience on Reddit, recounting how she discovered nude photos she had taken with her partner three years ago and subsequently deleted. These images suddenly resurfaced, causing her embarrassment and confusion.
Another user mentioned on X (previously known as Twitter) that four photos from 2010 reappeared as the most recent uploads to her device. "This is the worst software experience in a long time", she lamented, clearly frustrated.
The iOS 17.5 update was supposed to enhance security, fix bugs, and introduce new features like a fresh background image. Instead, it brought about some undesired changes.
It seems that images that were supposedly permanently deleted have reappeared, bypassing the usual process of first being moved to the "Recently Deleted" album for 30 days before getting erased. Apple states that this process can take up to 40 days or longer if the shared media library is used. Yet, the current issue appears to restore photos that have been deleted for a longer period.
Experts at the technology blog "MacRumors" speculate that the cause of this odd occurrence could stem from an indexing error, damage to the photo library, or a synchronization issue between local devices and iCloud photos. In some cases, it might even be due to Apple unintentionally causing a new synchronization problem while attempting to resolve an earlier one, potentially impacting cloud backups.
This issue seems to occur regardless of whether the photos were synced with iCloud or stored offline on the device. As stated in a report from Heise Online, forensic software developers have previously pointed out the possibility of restoring deleted iOS data under specific circumstances. This includes deleted notes, text messages, and the history of Safari.
Apple has not yet publicly acknowledged or commented on this photo bug.
In this update, the re-emergence of deleted photos appears to be an unexpected outcome, leaving users frustrated and perplexed.
