UPDATE: Mass shooting on UNLV campus leaves three dead, gunman dead

A mass shooter died after killing at least three victims on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus around noon Wednesday, according to media and police reports. Panicked students fled and hid in campus buildings.

At least one of the victims was listed in critical condition at a local hospital late Wednesday afternoon. According to a preliminary statement from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), multiple people were injured in the shooting.

The shootings occurred on or near the Frank campus and Estela Beam Hall. The building houses the UNLV Lee School of Business. Initial reports indicate a shooting occurred in or near the UNLV Student Union, located near Beam Hall.

Business school faculty member Stephen Miller said he was in his fifth-floor office in Beam Hall when the fire alarm went off.

I went down the stairs. Halfway through I heard a lot of sirens. "As I exited the stairwell, I saw students fleeing the building,"Miller said."I followed the crowd and fled the building."

Miller revealed that shortly after leaving Beam Hall, he received a text message from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. It warns of an active shooter and provides safety instructions.

Students and Staff Seek Protection

During the shooting, campus police directed students and staff to find safe shelter. They were later told to shelter in place. After the gunman's death, police gradually evacuated campus buildings.

The victim's name has not been released.

LVMPD officers responded to the campus after being alerted to the shooting.

We all walked out of the building with our hands up,"one student told KVVU."They evacuated us from the student union. We walked past a window and it was shot through and there was glass everywhere. "

“About 200 kids all crammed into one room,” she continued, describing the situation in the student union. "A lot of people are panicking."

Las Vegas television station KLAS reported that some students were hiding in the classroom when the shooting occurred.

One student, Matthew, told police he pushed six desks against the classroom door to protect himself from the gunman.

It's very scary when you visit a college campus that is so open," he added. "People are scared now because every time you go into a college campus, there are shootings every year. I wasn't even close and now I'm still scared out of my mind. "

The White House issued a statement

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at a news conference Wednesday afternoon that she had just been informed of the shooting.

Certainly, we will continue to monitor what is happening right now," Jean-Pierre said."I don't want to prejudge what local law enforcement may be dealing with at this time. "

President Joe Biden is expected to visit Las Vegas on Friday.

Maryland Parkway near campus was closed due to police action. Drivers are advised to avoid the immediate area.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
