Upcoming Developments in Greek Casino Sector

Over the next few weeks, casinos in Greece will see significant changes in their operations, sparking conversations among members of the gambling sector. The Hellenic Gaming Commission (EEEP) has put forward three proposed alterations that are now up for debate.

Among the suggested modifications is the establishment of a national self-exclusion register to revamp current player protection laws. EEEP would regulate the register, containing details of players wanting to temporarily step away from gambling. This register would include the duration of the ban and the identity of the licensee who received the ban request.

Players would be able to choose the duration of their self-exclusion, ranging from a week to ten months. To end the ban, the player would need to request to lift the restriction after the chosen time frame has lapsed.

Another added law under consideration is the inclusion of an individual playing card. This would enable players to engage in casino games at physical casinos while connected to their online player accounts.

The third open discussion involves the need for a studio space in every licensed casino. The studio's purpose would be to operate live dealer games.

Feedback is welcome from the gambling industry until September 15, after which the debate will close. If accepted, these proposals will be implemented by the Greek Ministry of National Economy and Finance.

The regulator considers these changes "essential innovations."

On their website, the commission stated, "This draft law focuses on the regulation of matters of administrative control and operation of casino businesses," and that "the consultation is put in place to gather the views of each interested party."

Furthermore, regulated casinos may be obligated to provide specialized training on Greece's gambling regulations through a set of education and training programs overseen by training managers. They would also have to send information about these programs to EEEP.

Other Updates in Greek Gambling

Soft2Bet recently received an A1 business-to-business license from Greece's regulator. This complements the company's development plans.

Gamblers in Greece can now enjoy NetGaming games, as a deal with Novibet has been struck. Initially released are slot machines, such as 3 Wild Jokers, Juicy Gold 100, and Lucky Vault. The full back catalog will be published during the year, along with other new games.

In late June, the Hellenic Gaming Commission enlarged its list of banned illegal online gambling sites. This was the 37th update to the iGaming blacklist, raising the total number of blocked domains to over 5,800.

The Greek gambling industry was regulated in 2011 with the passing of the Gambling Act. In early 2018, a new law introduced a revised regulatory framework for licensing and running casino companies, aiming to stimulate competition in the Greek casino business and invite foreign investment.
