Initially Schuhbeck, now Bachmeier faces similar issues. - Upcoming Bavarian TV chef faces financial difficulties.
Celebrity chef Alfons Schuhbeck, age 75, is serving a sentence of three years and two months in prison for tax fraud. However, he may soon be released.
At the same time, Hans-Joerg Bachmeier, a former TV chef for Bavarian Broadcasting (Bayerischer Rundfunk, or BR), is facing financial challenges. He has to declare bankruptcy for the "Beim Sedlmayr" restaurant.
Bachmeier had just taken over the long-standing establishment in October 2022 when issues with the building's roof came to light in June 2023, necessitating urgent renovations. The work had to be carried out outside of normal business hours, causing quite a disruption.
"For several months, the Sedlmayr was barely visible behind the scaffolding. Many customers stayed away during this time, and the sidewalk seating areas were flooded. This resulted in significant losses for the business," Bachmeier explained.
During this period, the landlord leased out the rooms elsewhere. The lease agreement with the brewery was no longer sustainable. As a result, Bachmeier had to seek bankruptcy for the Sedlmayr.
Fourteen employees were laid off, notified through a staff meeting. Wirt Hans-Joerg Bachmeier expressed genuine distress, wishing he could've continued, but his efforts were hampered by prevailing circumstances.
The iconic restaurant "Beim Sedlmayr" was founded in 1989 by the well-loved actor Walter Sedlmayr. He opened it a year before he was murdered by his adopted son, who had helmed the business earlier and eventually received a life sentence for the crime following a sensational trial alongside his half-brother.
