Unveiling the Truth: Floyd Mayweather Was Present at Tupac Shakur's Assassination
On July 26, 2023, a social media video gaining popularity showed newly-retired boxing champion Floyd Mayweather claiming that he was the first to report knowing details about rapper Tupac Shakur's shooting in 1996.
Addressing filmmaker John Singleton (Boyz n the Hood), Mayweather reveals in a now viral video, “A car pulled up right here and shot Tupac at this light and went that way,” pointing at a specific area with his hand. In only three days, the video accumulated over 10 million views.
"I ain't never told nobody," Mayweather says to Singleton. "Only the closest people with me know."
This case is not only an interesting mystery in Vegas history; it is also one that easily dissects.
To begin, Mayweather never openly declared he was present during the murder of Tupac Shakur. In the video, which is around 17 seconds long, Mayweather only shares his knowledge of the location of the incident due to his frequent past residency there.
However, @DailyLoud, the person who circulated this video on Twitter, decided to play with words and underestimate the minds of their viewers. Their headline was deliberately misleading: “Floyd Mayweather says he witnessed Tupac's murder in Las Vegas.”
This fabrication was then picked up by a handful of low-end news sites, all vying for higher viewer counts, and published as if it were a brand-new, crucial revelation.
As Mayweather detailed in his official Instagram statement posted on July 27, "All of these false accusations stem from me sharing the location of the shooting with John Singleton due to my familiarity of the area since I lived there.” He said, “This does not mean I witnessed Tupac’s shooting."
Having lost no time ignoring the truth, the unscrupulous news sites subsequently misled their readers by claiming "Mayweather changed his story."
What is Fact:
Tupac Shakur was killed on September 7, 1996, on Flamingo Road in Las Vegas at around 11:15 p.m., right after attending a Mike Tyson fight at the MGM Grand. His car, a BMW driven by his close friend, Death Row Records chief Suge Knight, was targeted by a white Cadillac carrying multiple passengers.
Immediately after firing, the Cadillac sped off in one direction, killing Shakur four times in his right lung, liver, and both lungs. Minutes following the shooting, Tupac was taken to University Medical Center in critical condition. In spite of the efforts of the doctors, his sedation left him in a coma until September 13, 1996, when he slipped into a vegetative state and died.
While the identity of the murderer remains unknown, with only a myriad of prime, unarrested suspects, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department re-opened the case on July 17, 2023, searching the Henderson, Nevada home of Duane Keith “Keffe D” Davis.
Davis, an individual familiar with the Anderson family and originally believed to be Orlando Anderson (long thought to be Tupac's killer), has departed from life years ago, in a 1998 gang-related shooting.
