Unveiling of Memorial Selection for Las Vegas Tragedy

Clark County's October 1st Memorial Committee unveiled their selected design for a lasting tribute to the victims of the 2017 Las Vegas massacre on Wednesday.

The chosen design, "Forever One" by JCJ Architecture, features a curved wall displaying the names of the 58 victims encircling 58 candle-like beams. The memorial, planned for two acres at the former Las Vegas Village site, will also include a central tower of light and a space for intimate gatherings and concerts.

The seven-member committee opted for JCJ's proposal over five other competitors. Their decision will be presented to the Clark County Commission during their September 5th meeting at 9 a.m. If approved, the commission will determine the steps needed to build and maintain the memorial.

As described on the JCJ website, "Forever One" aims to give individuals a space for reflection and remembrance while providing solace, healing, and a reminder of the value of peace, unity, and violence prevention. The firm consulted with groups of family members, survivors, and responders to guide their design.

Should the commission accept this design, they'll select the following actions for "Forever One's" creation and maintenance. A secondary design by OLIN + Andy Scott with large metal equine statues was also considered but not chosen.

Despite the futuristic design not including the two additional victims who later passed, Chairman Tennille Periera assured media the duo would still be honored within the memorial. This news was covered by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The site of the memorial is near Reno Avenue and Giles Street, adjacent to the Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer, a Roman Catholic church that served as a sanctuary for shooting victims.

Back in 2022, North Dakota's Three Affiliated Tribes bought 13 acres of the original Las Vegas Village festival grounds for $90M. However, the remaining two acres will now be dedicated to "Forever One."

This rendering provides context for where the memorial will be built. The Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer church is at the bottom right.
