Issues at German Airports - Unpaid salaries could lead to flight suspensions.
### Privately Owned Companies Movement Screening
The screening of passengers and their belongings is generally carried out by the Federal Police, but in Germany, private companies offer their services to perform these duties. The one with the most cost-effective plan usually wins the contract.
Failed Salary Payments
However, one of these private companies, ESA Luftsicherheit GmbH, has not paid its workers in Weeze, Erfurt, and Dresden their wages. The Federal Police Headquarters confirmed that there were delays in the payment of salaries to employees in these locations in May.
Affected Personnel
This issue affects around 100 staff members in Weeze, about 80 in Dresden, and almost 30 in Erfurt who are responsible for checking passengers. Meanwhile, the 300 employees working in Berlin Airport received their salaries late in April but are unaffected this time.
Unhappy Union
Ver.di labor union secretary Ozay Tarim, a security expert, is voicing concerns over privatization. "State duties must not be contracted out to profit-driven private companies," she said. According to Tarim, there are nationwide collective bargaining agreements in place. "It's hard to understand how one offer can be cheaper than the other in a bidding process," she added.
Flight Delays Expected
If there is a shortage of staff, Tarim warns that there may be "massive delays" or even "flight cancellations" in Weeze, Erfurt, and Dresden. "Travelers and business people should take this into account and plan accordingly," she advised. The Federal Police spokesperson also suggested the possibility of flight cancellations without being able to predict their certainty at this point.
