UNLV gunman makes sexist remarks about students during appearance

Troubling accusations about the past of a man who killed three University of Nevada, Las Vegas professors last week are emerging, including accusations that he previously published while teaching at North Carolina Offensive remarks.

In 2016, Anthony Polito reportedly approached East Carolina University (ECU) student Kristin Marshburn as she sat outside a classroom.

"He told me if I wore a low-cut shirt for the rest of the semester, I would definitely get an A," Mashburn, now 28, told NBC News.

Mashburn, one of the few students in Polito's supply chain management course, called it a "courageous comment." She said she and many other students were shocked, NBC reported.

She reported the inappropriate comments to the dean’s office. Polito resigned from his teaching position a few months later.

While it's unclear whether the comment led to his resignation, Mashburn said he never returned to the classroom after making the explicit comments.

She praised the response of ECU management and firmly believed its report did the right thing.

"None of our professors or anyone else can make sexual comments or comments about our dress or appearance," Mashburn told NBC.

PRAY UNTIL

A second former student of Polito also told NBC that Polito made her feel uncomfortable while she was taking his class at ECU. She revealed that he emailed and texted her every day and showered her with gifts. He also invited her to go to Las Vegas with him.

I feel like I'm being exploited,"the woman, who asked not to be identified, told NBC. "It's so weird. "

Several former students also complained that most of Polito's lectures were not about supply chain management but about his many trips to Las Vegas.

Years later, on December 6, Polito shot and killed three professors at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He was shot and killed by a security guard on the Las Vegas campus.

The 67-year-old Henderson, Nevada, resident had been trying to land a teaching position at UNLV. But the school refused to hire him.

Clark County Sheriff Kevin McMahill also revealed that Polito had a "target list" that included the names of UNLV and ECU professors. None of the three University of Nevada, Las Vegas professors who died are on the list, nor is a fourth University of Nevada, Las Vegas professor who was injured and survived.

Like the victim

A memorial service was held Wednesday for three murdered professors at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. They include Jerry Cha-Jan Chang, Patricia Navarro Velez and Naoko Takemaru.

In a eulogy, a colleague and friend, Gloribert Roque-Melendez, recalled Velez's love of cooking.

"She loved to dance. She loved to sing. She had a beautiful voice. Her smile and energy were contagious. She was smart. She was very nice."

Ashley Weckesser, a graduate student at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, recalled Zhang’s help and support for students.

As a researcher in his department looking for guidance, I know I can always count on his office door being open and him being there. He is always there, ready to help us. "

UNLV graduate Devon Whitaker also praised Takemaru.

“You could walk into her office at any time of the day with any concern, not just science, but any concern, and she would try to help you.”
