University of Nevada, Las Vegas shooter reportedly unable to find faculty position on campus
The man who shot and killed three victims and wounded a fourth at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Wednesday was reportedly a professor who did not have a job at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. .
ABC News identifies the now-dead mass shooter as Anthony Polito, 67. According to the Associated Press, he worked at East Carolina University in North Carolina. Polito taught economics subjects throughout his academic career. He most recently lived in Henderson, Nevada.
First, Polito went to the fourth floor of Frank and Estela Beam Hall on the Lee School of Business campus. He began shooting a handgun around 11:45 a.m., stopping on other floors of the building before walking outside. According to witnesses, up to 20 shots were fired.
Authorities did not immediately release the name of the murder victim. The deceased was a faculty member at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, ABC News reported. The fourth victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. The patient was in critical but stable condition as of Wednesday evening.
Four other people on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus were taken to local hospitals for treatment for "panic-related" symptoms, CNN reported.
UNLV Housing Available
Two university police officers then confronted Polito, who shot them. Police returned fire and killed him.
As the shooting unfolded, panicked students ran for cover and hid in campus buildings. University security asked them to seek shelter where they were. UNLV security gave the all-clear about 40 minutes after the incident.
Economics faculty member Stephen Miller said he was in his fifth-floor office in Beam Hall when the fire alarm went off.
"I went down the stairs. Halfway through I heard a lot of sirens. As I exited the stairwell, I saw students fleeing the building."
Campus Closed
UNLV canceled classes and many other events on Sunday following the shooting, Las Vegas television station KLAS reported.
Officials also temporarily closed Beam Hall, the Flora Dungan Humanities Building, the Student Union, Wright Hall Buildings A, B and C, and the UNLV Bookstore.
Most faculty and staff will work from home for the remainder of the week. The UNLV basketball game at the University of Dayton, Ohio, was also canceled.
Condolences have poured in from across the country on the UNLV campus. In a show of support for UNLV, Resorts World Las Vegas and Strat Hotel, Casino & Tower lit up tents Wednesday night with the words: "#UNLV Strong #Vegas Strong."
