Demonstration against the protest camp - University backdrop hosts Jewish Festival of Light

The Geschwister-Scholl-Platz in Munich witnessed a vibrant celebration of "Lag baOmer - the Festival of Light and Hope" by the Israeli community. Hundreds of individuals gathered over the weekend, sharing meals, music, and strong spirits despite the challenging circumstances. Across from this, a group of pro-Palestine students have been demonstrating against Israel for ten days. These protests came after the tragic events on October 7, when more than 1500 Israelis perished, and many more were kidnapped and held captive during the Hamas attack on the country.

"Run for Their Lives" is a global event organized every Sunday in honor of the hostages who remain in captivity. The remembrance run on this specific day commenced at the town hall in Munich and culminated at the Geschwister-Scholl-Platz, where the Israeli community set up a massive video screen facing the pro-Palestine group. The film showcased the gruesome acts committed by Hamas during the attack (with a censored version to avoid too much violence). This action was meant to remind protesters of the actual consequences of their support and the root cause of the war in Gaza.

As one of the event's organizers, Guy Katz states, "The anger we've encountered is a positive outcome for us." The video screen was entirely funded by donations totaling more than 35,000 euros through crowdfunding and will remain operational until the Anti-Israel camp is permitted to stay (until June 6).

Guy Katz of "Run for Their Lives" emphasizes, "Our screen initiative has significantly heightened the awareness of Munich locals and fostered critical thinking." Volunteers, both Jewish and non-Jewish, are actively advocating for Israel at the video screen daily.
