Union's Remarks Spark Discussion Regarding Israel-Hamas Standoff
The culinary union based in Las Vegas, along with its parent organization Unite Here, has made a plea for an immediate end to the hostilities between Israel and Hamas firepower.
Recently, Ted Pappageorge, the treasurer of the Culinary Union, emphasized the need for a stop to the ongoing conflict due to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He also mentioned that the union wants to support the democracy in the region and continue engaging in dialogue with workers and their families.
The union also seeks to free the hostages taken by the Hamas fighters and work towards granting Palestinians their freedom.
In a similar statement, Unite Here urges to be part of a movement towards a more enduring peace.
As of now, it's been estimated that 134 people are still being held captive in the Gaza Strip by Hamas terrorists. In the month of October, Hamas abducted over 250 hostages from Israel. Many have since been released after Israel traded Palestinian prisoners for these hostages.
The tragic Oct. 7 attack resulted in the death of about 1,200 people. The majority of these victims were civilians, many of whom were brutally killed or sexually assaulted.
Since then, Israel has been carrying out military operations to annihilate militants and leaders of Hamas. These operations also aim to liberate the remaining hostages.
Dismantle Hamas
In response to the union statement, Rabbi Yitz Wyne, the spiritual leader of Young Israel Aish synagogue of Las Vegas, expressed gratitude towards Unite Here's call for the release of Israeli hostages. However, he criticized the union for not empathizing with the plight of the over 1,200 people murdered by Hamas and their desire to completely eliminate the State of Israel and continue their attacks against the Jewish people.
He expressed his support for Israel's military operations and called for the acknowledgment that the hardships endured by those in Gaza are a direct result of the hatred and violence inflicted by Hamas on Israel and its people.
Prioritize Workers' Benefits
Eve Edison, a culinary worker, expressed her annoyance at the union's focus on the situation in Gaza in a social media post, wishing her union would focus on securing better working conditions, a more reliable pension, and increment in salaries. She articulated, "If I were a culinary worker who was compelled to contribute dues, this is not what I'd want my union to prioritize." She further added, "Don't alienate my guests."
