Unidentified Gunman in Deadly MGM National Harbor Shooting Still on the Loose, Police Call for Help Identifying Suspect

At MGM National Harbor, located in Maryland near Washington D.C., a shooting incident occurred over the weekend, in which an unidentified individual was fatally injured. Police officers in the region are working on finding the perpetrator of this crime.

The casual atmosphere reigns in MGM National Harbor on Monday, located in Oxon Hill, MD, despite the integrated resort casino being the site of a fatal shooting this past Saturday, May 11th. The Homicide Unit of Prince George's County Police Department has shared that an adult male met with this fate due to the incident. His identity will be announced once his family has been contacted and informed.

Authorities arrived at the MGM property around 4:50 am on Saturday, following reports of a shooting in the parking garage by the casino's security team. Upon their arrival, they discovered a man with gunshot wounds who subsequently succumbed to his injuries shortly after. Despite efforts from first responders to save his life, he could not be revived.

Investigators are actively seeking information regarding the suspect(s) involved in the shooting. Individuals with any insights are asked to connect with Prince George’s County Crime Solvers by dialing 1-866-411-TIPS or by visiting www.pgcrimesolvers.com.

MGM National Harbor is positioned across the Potomac River from Alexandria and is roughly two miles from the Washington, DC border.

Rising Crime in the Region

Rising crime rates continue to be a concern in the National Harbor area. Prince George’s County is dealing with several instances of disorderly conduct, offences such as shoplifting, and vandalism.

To address the concerns, late April saw the implementation of a curfew for persons aged 16 and below without adult supervision. The curfew mandates that these individuals stay off the National Harbor premises between 5 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. This was done following reports of large groups of juveniles and minors causing trouble, which has witnessed numerous businesses in the area suffer damage to their property and experience significant financial losses. Residents and visitors to the area have also been adversely affected.

However, it is unclear at present if this weekend's casino shooting was connected to any underage persons.

The fatal incident is another example of the worsening safety and security state of the National Harbor area, which boasts an array of entertainment, shopping, and hospitality offerings in its waterfront mixed-use development.

Local business owners have observed a decrease in the number of visitors to the region this year in comparison to the previous year.

MGM National Harbor's casino floor has endured the impact of the downturn. Last year, the casino earned $834.1 million from patrons. While this still puts them among the wealthiest casinos in the US, outside of Las Vegas, the overall gross gaming revenue corresponds to a 6% decline compared to 2022.

The Casino's Silence

MGM National Harbor did not provide any comments to the media regarding the incident. This is not surprising, as casinos, both in Las Vegas and elsewhere, typically avoid public commentary on the crimes which take place within their premises.

MGM National Harbor has been their most profitable property outside of the Las Vegas Strip for several years. In 2023, the company attributed the decline in their gaming revenue at MGM National Harbor to "a decrease in high-end table volume." The more than 200 table games within MGM National Harbor saw their winnings drop by more than 14% in 2023, from $407.5 million in 2022 to $348.8 million.

Gaming revenue has continued to decline at MGM National Harbor this year. Through April, the casino had generated approximately $276 million in GGR. By this time last year, they had already won $286 million.
