Underground Las Vegas Residence Matches Public (Temporarily)

An unusual chance has arisen to visit Las Vegas' one-of-a-kind home known as the "Underground House." While most Las Vegans are familiar with this 15,000-square-foot doomsday shelter constructed entirely beneath the ground yet enveloped in simulated daylight, trees, and grass to resemble the real outdoors, not many have seen it up close, as it has been in private ownership since its construction.

Now, you can experience this architectural marvel during a special bus tour organized by the Nevada Preservation Foundation (NPF) on three particular days in April.

The Underground Dwelling

The Underground House was created by business tycoon Girard B. Henderson in 1978, who was 25 feet below ground level. As an acknowledged leader in underground living, Henderson sponsored the Underground World Home exhibit at the 1964 New York World's Fair.

Henderson designed this hideout as a bunker to safeguard him and his family from the anticipated nuclear war he foresaw between the United States and the former Soviet Union. He tragically passed away from a heart attack in the house on November 16, 1983.

The house can be found at 3970 Spencer St., roughly three miles from the Flamingo casino, but it's indistinguishable from the street due to a traditional two-story house, which seems to date from the 1980s, built over it.

In March 2014, Henderson's previous house was acquired for $1.15 million by the Society for the Preservation of Near Extinct Species, an enigmatic organization devoted to extending human lifespan.

In September 2020, it was sold for $841,066 to its current owner, a Texas-based entity called the Stasis Foundation.

Central to the NPF's bus tour, dubbed "Home + History Las Vegas," is a journey through the atomic age, exploring lesser-known sites such as forgotten fallout shelters and locations for nuclear explosions observation.

The tour is scheduled for April 25-28, 2024, and holds a price tag of $125 per person, with the gathering's proceeds allocated to preserving historical heritage.

The main house has two bedrooms and three bathrooms in 800 feet. It’s joined by a 600-square-foot casita.
The current owner listed the Underground House for $5.9 million in 2021, 2023, and 2024 without any takers. Its last listing was removed on February 4.
