Under a new law, sports bettors in Denmark are required to show their ID cards while placing bets.
The Ministry of Taxation announced on Monday that starting from now, all sports bettors in Denmark must provide identification each time they place a bet. This policy has been in development for approximately ten years.
Each player will receive an ID card with a unique identification number. Operators are responsible for deciding whether they provide physical cards or digital alternatives. These ID cards are exclusive to individual operators, as per the ministry's requirements.
The idea of implementing this identification method has been around since 2015, but only gained significant traction last year, resulting in its incorporation into Danish sports betting regulations this year. Initially, the rollout was slated for 2022, but has been postponed.
The cards will be released in just four days.
How the ID Card System Functions
Denmark-based sports bettors must enroll with each specific operator to receive their personal identification card. Upon using the card at a physical betting shop, the system automatically verifies the relevant information with the game provider, preventing the shop from approving the bet if necessary details are missing or incorrect. This reduction in anonymity should make it more difficult for minors (under 18), self-excluded individuals, and those who have exceeded their own set betting limits to place wagers in physical shops.
If a betting slip gets lost, the registered player ID data can verify the wagers and any rewards. Additionally, any bettors present in the Register of Voluntarily Excluded Players (ROFUS) as of October 1 will be unable to place a bet.
The primary motivation behind this initiative, endorsed by the Danish gaming regulator, Spillemyndigheden, is to combat money laundering through the prevention of anonymous gaming, as advocated by the program's supporters.
