Within the Bentheim Forest lies a hidden gem. - Uncommon Black Stork Caught on Wildlife Camera
Close to Bad Bentheim, there's a tranquil encounter with a calmly wading creature. This photo was captured on May 7, showcasing an animal gracefully making its way through a pond. Forestry company employees find it impressive due to the black stork's near-extinct status in Germany.
Dating back decades, the black stork's population had dwindled. Its reclusive nature made it hard to spot, so sightings are still rare. Thankfully, conservation measures have improved the situation - even in Bentheim Forest. Cooperating with the Grafschaft Bentheim nature conservation group, they've placed nesting aids to help these birds find safe sanctuaries in the forest's older area.
Forester Olaf Hoffmann is overjoyed: "We've occasionally spotted black storks before, but having one in a photo is exceptional."
Keeping a Low Profile
In contrast to the widely-known white stork, the inscrutable black stork shies away from crowds. It's not a fan of people or populated spaces, preferring the seclusion of older, less-dense forests. When disturbed, it'll often fly to a different spot, preserving the privacy they cherish so much.
