Mainz's chief, Heidel, speaks out. - Unanticipated view on the astonishing rescue
During the 2020/21 Bundesliga season, Mainz 05 accomplished a feat never before seen in German football: despite just earning 7 points in the preliminary round, they managed to rank 12th in the standings under coach Bo Svensson.
This year, the team underwent a miracle rescue led by Svensson's compatriot Bo Henriksen. Mainz had bottomed out and at one point were even 10 points shy of escaping the relegation zone. Nonetheless, the 05ers managed to dodge relegation by securing a 3:1 win over Wolfsburg in their final match.
Which of these two last-minute saves was more impressive?
"It's hard to compare them," remarked Mainz's sporting director, Christian Heidel. "In the previous season, there weren't any spectators due to the pandemic, so it was a completely different atmosphere - we were basically all alone."
"It's more fun this time," Heidel chimed, with a grin. "When there's excitement from the audience, it just feels like a more lively game."
"I think it was actually more challenging the first time around," Heidel continued, pondering. "When we returned [from Mallorca, where he took a brief break], we only had 6 points, while now we had 11 after the initial round. I also understood better what was holding us back this time."
According to Heidel, theTimelineBadLuck injuries from the prior season were the primary reason for the team's predicament. Heidel reflected, "I knew that if all the players healed, we would have a stronger team overall.".
