UN official: Approximately 670 people are assumed to have perished in a landslide incident in Papua New Guinea.
Aktoprak states that the rescue mission in Papua New Guinea's Enga province, up in the mountainous region, is extremely challenging. "The scenario is horrific, the ground continues to slip," shared the UN migration agency's rep. "The water is flowing and this presents an immense risk for all those involved." People are utilising "sticks, shovels and large beams" to unearth the deceased, Aktoprak elaborated.
Papua New Guinea lies in the southwest Pacific and is often bombarded by persistent rainfall. This year has already witnessed significant downpours and flooding. In March, there were at least 23 deaths due to a landslide in an adjacent region.
