Biden signals approval. - Ukraine could potentially target Russian land using American-supplied tools.
President Joe Biden has lifted restrictions that previously stopped Ukraine from using US-supplied weapons on Russian soil. This rule, however, only applies to the defense of Kharkiv, according to a US government official in Washington.
"The President recently told his team to ensure that Ukraine can use the weapons given by the US for counterattacks in the Kharkiv region," the anonymous official said. "Ukraine should be able to fight back against the Russian forces that are attacking or preparing to attack them."
This development poses a challenge for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who has maintained a non-committal stance on the matter and continues to emphasise his desire to prevent "a war between Russia and NATO." Russian leader Vladimir Putin is taking full advantage of this situation, as he regularly bombards the region with missiles. On Friday morning, a residential building in Kharkiv was also targeted.
The lifting of the ban involving ATACMS missiles or long-range missiles in Russia has not made any difference, the official noted, "referring to the missiles that Washington recently sent to Kiev." A second US official confirmed this information. Earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken had given a hint that Biden might shift his position on this issue.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed to his allies in the last few weeks to allow him to launch attacks on Russian targets using the weapons they provided. Since mid-May, the Russian army has been on the offensive in the Kharkiv region and has made some progress.
