UK authorities propose implementing cashless gaming devices.

Apparent reports suggest that the British administration intends to permit gamblers to employ debit cards while wagering on slot machines. This option for cashless payments, though, is only available in casinos, amusement arcades, and restaurants. Credit cards are still outlawed for such ventures.

Financial Limits for Debit Card Payments at UK Gaming Machines

A BBC article [link in English] reveals that the UK government will impose bounds on cashless transactions at gaming machines. As pertains to cash payments, from now on, you can only deposit up to £20 per transaction at a gaming machine. User authentication is achievable with the debit card's chip and PIN or biometric check.

These bank card payments aim to bring brick-and-mortar casinos at par with online gaming. The latter threatens the practicality of conventional casinos due to the notable drop in cash payments, as directly paying with bank cards is facilitated only in online casinos. Such a scenario could potentially endanger jobs within the gambling sector in the UK.

BGC Warmly Welcomes Proposed Changes, Gambling with Lives' Concerns

The UK's gambling industry association, the Betting and Gaming Council (BGC), applauds these adjustments and urges prompt rollout plans.

However, Gambling with Lives, a British non-profit group, expresses discontent with the plans. The organization's co-founder, Liz Ritchie, opined in a brief statement regarding these measures:

'Whatever facilitates access to highly addictive machines can't be seen as a positive. [...] Rather, we must address ways to safeguard these machines by reducing deposit limits and reducing the spin rate.' - Liz Ritchie, Gambling with Lives co-founder, BBC

In the UK, cashless payments for gambling can currently only be made through mobile apps or purchasing special keys for slot machines. Paying directly with debit or credit cards has been disallowed due to a 2007 law. New gambling policies for player well-being were also declared in the UK, incorporating monetary checks on players. Last year, strict cap restraints on the stake for every online casino gaming round were also introduced.

Cashless Payments in Online Casinos Only Possible in Germany

Currently, you can't undertake direct debit or credit card transactions at slot machines in German physical gaming arenas. This regulation also applies to land-based casinos in Germany. Cash is the only acceptable payment type here. Cashless payments are feasible for the entry fee at a casino's cash counter.

Online payment providers such as Sofort, Trustly, Klarna, and Giropay are available for cashless transactions in online casinos. However, if you plan on making cashless transactions in online casinos and prefer using your checking account, you must have your own net banking access.

The timeline for cashless gambling in the UK remains unclear. It's unattended if this might be made possible in Germany in the future.
