UFC first sports event to book Las Vegas arena
UFC is the premier sporting event in the Las Vegas circuit. Over the weekend, UFC boss Dana White confirmed the Sept. 16 fight at The Globe.
“We’ve booked The Sphere for Mexico’s Independence Day,” White said at the UFC 295 post-fight press conference in New York. "We're already working on creative ideas for the show. It's going to be a huge challenge and I'm loving every minute of it. "
White did not provide any details. However, in his characteristically hyperbolic way, he promised that the event would be "the greatest live martial arts show anyone has ever seen."
Fit the octagon into the spherical hole
White said his "good relationship" with Sphere and Madison Square Garden Company owner James Dolan helped broker the deal, though he admitted to testing that relationship by "calling him about Sphere."
The UFC boss said in an interview with ESPN's "Pat McAfee Show" last month that since U2 remains there, he has set a goal for his company to be the first to live stream the expensive $2.3 billion site.
I've been obsessed with this orb for the past few weeks, White said, adding that he had the entire production team watch U2: Ultraviolet Warning Baby so they could come up with ideas for the visual effects, Enclosing an octagon, it's front and center in the world's largest domed theater.
"I'm telling you right now, this place is amazing," White told McAfee.
Since the inaugural event in 2001 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, the UFC has held most of its events in Las Vegas. Next up is a welterweight title fight between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington on December 16 at T-Mobile Arena.
This year's UFC Mexico Independence Day event, also airing on T-Mobile, pitted reigning champion Alexa Grasso against former world champion Valentina Shevchenko There was a women's flyweight title fight. The fight ended in a draw, with Grasso retaining the title.
