Two Arrested in Montreal for Killing Daughter-in-Law in Mafia Dispute
Montreal police have arrested two suspects in connection with the fatal shooting of Claudia Iacono.
Claudia Iacono was the daughter-in-law of the late Moreno Gallo, a prominent figure in the Calabrian arm of the Montreal Mafia. She was gunned down in broad daylight on May 16 outside the beauty salon she owned in the city's Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood. Her husband, Anthony Gallo, is Moreno Gallo's son.
Moreno Gallo was murdered in Mexico in 2013 while dining at an Italian restaurant. He had fled Canada a year earlier due to a dispute with Sicilian-born Mafia boss Vito Rizzuto.
A New Low in Mafia Violence
Iacono's death is one of several killings and attempted murders in Montreal that are believed to be linked to tensions between Calabrian and Sicilian gangs in the city. The Iacono killing has raised eyebrows among Mafia observers because the victim was a woman and not thought to be connected with crime organizations.
André Gélinas, a former sergeant from the Montreal police's criminal intelligence unit, told CBC News, "We've just crossed a line by killing the spouse. Now, this limit will be crossed by criminal organizations. It just sent the message that no one is untouchable anymore."
The 'Mastermind' Is Apprehended
The Montreal police announced on Monday that they had captured a 30-year-old man in Toronto who they think masterminded Iacono's murder. The suspect's identity hasn't been released.
Joel Richard Clarke, a 28-year-old man, is believed to be the actual shooter. He was apprehended near Toronto on June 6.
According to police, Iacono was shot numerous times in her car before crashing into a building. Witnesses reported seeing a suspect flee on foot after the attack.
Soon after, Francesco Del Balso, a 53-year-old former leader in the Rizzuto crime family and boss of the syndicate's illegal gambling operations, was shot dead in broad daylight.
Del Balso was suspected of orchestrating the attempted assassination of Leonardo Rizzuto, Vito Rizzuto's son, in March.
The Rizzuto Crime Family
The Rizzuto crime family, also known as the Sixth Family in Canada in reference to New York's Five Families, is said to be closely linked to the Bonanno crime family. The FBI has even claimed that they are one and the same.
The family was established by Vito's father, Nicolo Rizzuto, who was Sicilian. In the late '70s, he began challenging the Calabrian-affiliated Cotroni family.
The leader of the Cotroni family, Frank Cotroni, passed away in 2004, clearing the path for the Rizzutos to seize power in Canada. With Calabria's 'Ndrangheta now being the most powerful Italian organized crime group worldwide, authorities fear the violent battle for supremacy in Montreal continues.
