Fire department faces continuous downpour - Torrential downpours inundate Saarland once more.
The city council of Saarbrücken is urging residents to take precautions as water levels in streams and rivers are expected to rise, and people should avoid entering basements. Cars along the Willi-Graf-Ufer and on the flood bypass need to be relocated.
A city official said, "We have over 200 rescue workers from the professional fire department and volunteer fire departments currently responding. The primary focus right now is on Bübingen, Fechingen, and Kleinblittersdorf."
There have been reports of flooded streets, landslides, and inundated cellars, but no injuries have been reported.
The State Office for Environmental Protection and Occupational Safety in Saarbrücken believes that due to the forecasted rainfall on Friday, water levels at the Saar gauges will skyrocket.
Although the water levels on the Blies, Nied, and Prims rivers are anticipated to decrease slightly from Friday night until Saturday, the peak is predicted on the Saar during Saturday morning.
The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a warning about severe storms for Saarland and areas south of Rhineland-Palatinate. Persistent heavy rain is predicted to last from Friday morning until Saturday night, particularly in the areas west of the Rhine.
Up to 50 liters of rain per square meter are forecasted to cover the region, with up to 70 liters per square meter possible in certain areas.
The Saarbrücken city authorities recommend that cell phone users install the Katwarn or Nina app. In case of an emergency, dial 112.
