Top In-Game Betting Apps Include FanDuel, DraftKings, and Bet365

In the realm of in-game and live betting in the United States, three sportsbook operators are standing out from the crowd: FanDuel, DraftKings, and Bet365.

A recent study conducted by research firm Eilers & Krejcik Gaming (EKG) revealed this information. They sent secret shoppers to test sports betting mobile apps in 11 states, evaluating the performance of various features and metrics such as speed in placing bets and completion rates.

Not surprisingly, FanDuel came out on top with a score of 17.0 out of a possible 20 points, giving DraftKings a run for its money with 16.4 points, and Bet365, the global leader in in-play betting, placing third with 16.0 points.

FanDuel, which is predominantly owned by Dublin-based Flutter Entertainment, and Bet365 may have an upper hand in live betting due to their European background. Since in-game wagering is rather common in Europe, with bettors typically favoring slower-paced sports like cricket, golf, and soccer, these companies have a natural advantage over their US counterparts. Approximately 75% of all sports bets in the UK are placed as in-game wagers.

Potential Threats: DraftKings and Bet365

Though FanDuel envelops the "slickest" app for live wagering with minimal flaws, there's still room for improvement.

DraftKings and Bet365, both giants in the live betting sphere, are not far behind. Bet365 is a prominent global sportsbook operator and its success in in-game betting might be a crucial element in its US expansion efforts.

EKG stated that DraftKings was impressive with a slew of prop bets and live same-game parlay (SGP) options while Bet365 took the cake when it came to speed, with a 3.5-second average for bet placement. The latter is one of the largest regulated sportsbook operators worldwide and has achieved this status mainly through its domination in the in-game betting arena.

DraftKings has entered into a live wagering agreement with the NBA, and its growing dominance in the SGP space has led it to become a serious contender in the in-game betting landscape.

Other Players of Note

Tipico and PointsBet, which will soon be owned by Fanatics, secured the last two spots in EKG's rankings for operator in-game betting performance. PointsBet's acquisition by Fanatics is relevant because PointsBet’s US operations are being purchased.

In March 2021, PointsBet bought Banach Technology for $43 million, a move driven by the desire to increase its presence in the ever-expanding in-game betting market. Banach Technology develops risk management and trading platforms that support both traditional and in-game betting products for the four major US sports leagues and international soccer leagues. This could be one of the factors behind Fanatics' interest in acquiring PointsBet.

According to EKG, PointsBet had one of the best feature sets, but still fell short in certain categories. With Fanatics' substantial resources, these weaknesses could potentially be addressed, making PointsBet a more formidable opponent to FanDuel, DraftKings, and Bet365.
