How to play Wordle
Wordle can be found on the New York Times website. A new puzzle goes live every day at midnight, your local time.
To start, make a guess of a five-letter word. The letters in the word will turn green if they're correct, yellow if you have the right letter but in the wrong place, or gray if the letter isn't present in the daily secret word. For more information, check out our playing Wordle guide here, and our more advanced strategy guide here. (We also have additional details at the bottom of this post after the clues and solutions.)

How I solved today's Wordle
After RAISE and TOUCH, I tried BLOND to eliminate probable and common letters. Stemming from this, the only viable solutions were GROWL or PROWL.
Yesterday's Wordle solution
Yesterday's Wordle was a simple puzzle. The hint mentioned "air-, space-, or spy-," and the answer contained three standard letters and two quite common ones.
Yesterday's Wordle answer was CRAFT.
The basics of Wordle
Wordle is all about identifying the day's secret word. You're given an empty grid of letters at the start of the game. It's your responsibility to make the initial move and input any five-letter word.
Afterwards, use the colors that are displayed to obtain clues about the word: Green indicates a correct letter in the correct position, while yellow shows a letter that is present but not in the guessed spot. (For instance, if you guess PARTY and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green.)
- Yellow suggests the letter is somewhere in the word but not in the allegedly correct position. (For example, if you guessed PARTY but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A, and T will all be yellow.)
- Gray means the letter is not in the secret word at all. (If you guessed PARTY and everything is grey, the solution can't be PURSE or ROAST.)
Utilize these clues to make your next guess, and keep doing so until you land on the correct word before all your attempts are used up. You have six tries, and if you run out, you lose.
The best starting words for Wordle
What's the ideal first choice to increase your chances of success? The best starter words tend to include common letters, boosting the odds of encountering yellow and green squares for guidance. No definitive "best" beginning option exists, but the New York Times' Wordle analysis bot recommends these possibilities:
- CRANE
- TRACE
- SLANT
- CRATE
- CARTE
The MIT analysis suggests the following options for eliminating the most prospects in the first round:
- SALET
- REAST
- TRACE
- CRATE
- SLATE
Other powerful options could be ARISE or ROUND. Options like ADIEU and AUDIO include more vowels, but it's more beneficial to focus on consonants at the start. Consider choosing your approach and experimenting with it.
The winning strategy in Wordle
We have numerous Wordle strategy guides you might find interesting. This one is about using consonants to your advantage, while this one focuses on a strategy built around the most common letters. Here's an advanced approach with three parts: searching for hints while optimizing your chances of triumphing swiftly. Explore these tactics and see how effective they are for you.
The main difference between those who win Wordle and those who don't is that winners use their guesses to collect data on what characters are in the word. For instance, if you know the word must end with "-OUND," don't waste four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND. Rather, combine those consonants and go for MARSH. If the H turns yellow, you've nailed it.
Also, remember that since the NYT bought the original Wordle, the word list for solving now consists of the selection made by an editor. Sometimes these solutions can be a bit unconventional and wouldn't have been on the original list, or even topical (such as FEAST during Thanksgiving). So it's crucial to be mindful of any potential themes.
Wordle alternatives
If you're hooked on five-letter word games and their ilk, here are some of the best alternatives, arranged by difficulty:
- Wheeldle, allowing you to swiftly solve one challenge after another
- Dordle and Quordle, requesting you to tackle two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles at the same time, using the same guesses. Other versions include Octordle (eight puzzles) and Sedecordle (16).
- Waffle, featuring several five-letter words scattered across a grid that you fix by swapping their positions until you solve.
- Absurdle, requiring you to corner the solution by anticipating the response to your guess. Once it's in a predicament and has only one possible answer, you can make your final guess and win.
- Squabble, pitting you against other players in a Wordle-style scenario. You're the victor if you're the last one standing, but take damage if you tarry between guesses too much.
- Antiwordle, demanding you to attempt not to guess the day's solution. You have to reuse any letters you've mistakenly guessed correctly, so the longer it takes you, the better you are at this game.
