What are the yellow words in today's Connections?
The yellow group is the easiest. The theme for today's yellow group is EXERCISES, and the words are: BRIDGE, CRUNCH, DIP, and SQUAT.
What are the green words in today's Connections?
The green group is supposed to be second-easiest. The theme for today's green category is FEATURED IN WESTERNS, and the words are: BOUNTY, COWBOY, DUEL, and SALOON.
What are the blue words in today's Connections?
The blue group is the second-hardest. The theme for today's blue category is LEADERS WHO RECEIVED THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE, and the words are: CARTER, GORE, KING, and TUTU.
What are the purple words in today's Connections?
The purple group is considered the hardest. The theme for today's purple category is [ANIMAL BEE], and the words are: BUSY, HONEY, QUEEN, and SPELLING.
How I solved today's Connections
I see QUEEN, COWBOY, and CARTER and immediately think of Beyoncé's new album (which I suspect is intentional). But then my brain makes a connection and I think of "QUEEN BEE" (like "Queen Bey"). Then I notice that BUSY, HONEY, and SPELLING all work with "bee". 🟪
Next, COWBOY, BOUNTY, SALOON, and DUEL all stand out as words related to Western films. 🟩
It seems like there's a fitness category with CRUNCH, BRIDGE, and DIP (as in a tricep dip). SQUAT looks odd with those, but checking the other tiles, I realize that the remaining words (CARTER, KING, GORE, and TUTU) are the last names of famous world leaders. (Jimmy Carter, Martin Luther King Jr., Al Gore, and Desmond Tutu) Oh, NYT says they all won the Nobel Peace Prize, that's right. 🟦
That leaves BRIDGE, CRUNCH, DIP, and SQUAT, which are all exercises. 🟨
About the Connections game
I've written a detailed guide on how to play Connections, but here's a summary of the rules:
First, locate the Connections game on the New York Times website or in their Games app (previously called the Crossword app). You'll see a game board with 16 tiles, each with one word or phrase. Your goal is to find a group of four tiles that share a connection. Often they're all the same type of thing (such as different types of weather) but sometimes there's wordplay involved (like BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH, which are all types of lists: bucket list, guest list, and so on).
Choose four items and click the Submit button. If you're spot on, the category and color will be unveiled. Remember that yellow is the simplest, then green, blue, and finally purple. If your guess doesn't match, you can try again.
You earn a victory when you've successfully deciphered all four categories. However, if you commit four errors before completing, the game finishes with the answers being disclosed.
Secrets to Ace Connections
It's crucial to understand that the groupings in Connections are intentionally challenging. They often contain overlapping elements. For instance, one puzzle had six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. However, BACON belonged to a group of artists with CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, while EGG was part of a group of things that come a dozen: JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH. Thus, make sure your selection has only those four items before clicking "submit".
If you're having difficulty, another method is to focus on words that appear to have no link to the others. If the only association you can think of for WHISTLER is the painting called "Whistler's Mother," then you might be onto something. In my experience, I had to search online if there was a painter named Close, since Close didn't fit any obvious themes.
Yet another approach when feeling stumped is to consult some helpful hints. That's why we provide these pointers every day. Make sure to check back tomorrow for the next puzzle!
