Ready to learn today's Connections answers? Here they are:

The yellow words in today's Connections

The yellow grouping is relatively straightforward. The theme for this yellow group is DIPPING SAUCES, and the words are: AIOLI, BARBECUE, MARINARA, RANCH.

The green words in today's Connections

The green grouping is supposed to be the second-easiest. The theme for today's green category is INTERROGATE, and the words are: EXAMINE, GRILL, PROBE, QUESTION.

The blue words in today's Connections

The blue grouping is the second hardest. The theme for today's blue category is TRANSACTION RECORD. The words are: BILL, INVOICE, RECEIPT, STATEMENT.

The purple words in today's Connections

The purple grouping is considered the hardest. The theme for today's purple category is WHAT "STOCK" MIGHT MEAN, and the words are: ANCESTRY, BROTH, CATTLE, MERCHANDISE.

How I solved today's Connections puzzle

Starting with the blue category, INVOICE and STATEMENT stand out as words related to billing for a service. BILL and RECEIPT also seem to fit. 🟦

EXAMINE, GRILL, PROBE, and QUESTION all look like investigative verbs. I initially thought BARBECUE would connect with PROBE (like a meat thermometer), but GRILL feels stronger. 🟩

MARINARA, BARBECUE, RANCH, and AIOLI all seem like various dips or sauces. 🟨

CATTLE, BROTH, MERCHANDISE, and ANCESTRY are the last four words. I wasn't sure what connected them all until I realized they all refer to "stocks" in a broader sense. ANCESTRY is a stretch, but it fits. 🟪

How to play Connections

I've covered how to play Connections in detail, but here's a quick refresher:

Go to the NYT website or the Connections game in their Games app. You'll see a grid with 16 tiles, each featuring a word or phrase. Your task is to identify a group of four tiles that share something in common. Sometimes they're the same type of thing (for instance, RAIN, SLEET, HAIL, and SNOW are all types of wet weather), while other times there's wordplay involved (BUCKET, GUEST, TOP TEN, and WISH all relate to lists).

Pick out four items and click the Submit button. If you're right, the category and color will show. The easiest color is yellow, followed by green, then blue, and finally purple.

You're a winner when you successfully identify all four categories. However, if you make four wrong guesses, the game is over and the solutions are unveiled.

Tips for Winning Connections

The key to winning Connections is understanding that the groupings are intentionally difficult. You'll often see categories that overlap. For instance, one puzzle featured six breakfast foods: BACON, EGG, PANCAKE, OMELET, WAFFLE, and CEREAL. But BACON was actually part of a group of painters including CLOSE, MUNCH, and WHISTLER, and EGG belonged to a set of things that come in dozens (which included JUROR, ROSE, and MONTH). Therefore, it's crucial to double-check your group of four to make sure it contains only the four items you've selected.

If you're struggling, another tactic is to focus on any words that appear to have no connection to the others. If all you can think of when you see WHISTLER is the famous artwork "Whistler’s Mother," you may be on the right track. When I solved that puzzle, I had to look up whether there was a painter named Close, as Close didn't seem to fit any obvious themes.

Another strategy for winning is to seek out advice. And that's why we give you hints every day! So come back tomorrow for another puzzle!
