Toads weighing more than humans -- a bizarre scenario indeed!

In Berlin, there is a lack of advancement in housing construction. This is due to the Senate and districts prioritizing toads over individuals searching for accommodation.

Gunnar Schupelius: Expressing His Fury - Toads weighing more than humans -- a bizarre scenario indeed!

Lichterfelde and Pankow present two instances of the craze for toads.

In Lichterfelde, located on the fringes of Berlin at Osdorfer Strasse, the Groth Group has been planning to construct more than 2,500 homes since 2010, with daycare facilities, an elementary school, and so forth. Due to the presence of lizards and moor frogs on the building site, spanning 97 hectares (formerly a US military base), Groth was required to develop a park adjacent to the area specifically for these animals, restricted for human access. A permit for the lizard park was granted, however, after 14 years, there's still none for the housing complex.

Transitioning to Pankower Tor: For 15 years, Kurt Krieger (Möbel Höffner) planned to construct 2,000 apartments and amenities like daycare centers, schools, a furniture store, and more on the land once occupied by a rail freight station (Pankow S-Bahn station). Located on this 34-hectare site are Natterjack toads and sand lizards. Krieger initially sought to relocate the wildlife to Brandenburg. However, the Naturschutzbund Deutschland e.V. (NABU) brought about a lawsuit, as the toads wouldn't be able to thrive in the Brandenburg habitat.

As of now, Krieger is no longer allowed to transport the toads to Brandenburg but must instead relocate them near the construction site. This site currently hosts the allotment garden "Feuchter Winkel West e.V." (for 99 years), whose plots will be cleared for the toads. The decision was made public by Cornelius Bechtler, Pankow city councillor (Greens).

It's almost comical: a park is being built in Lichterfelde for moor frogs, but no apartments, and Pankow allotment gardeners are being displaced to accommodate the toads. In both instances, this toad controversy is preventing any residential structures from being erected.

The world seems absurd, and while it could be amusing if it weren't so awful. Ultimately, many people desperately seeking apartments and unable to discover one, expanding families unable to move and find suitable accommodation - they have no reason to laugh.

Nature preservation has clearly run amok. Although it might be necessary to safeguard natterjack toads and moor frogs, people should always come first. This situation shows the absurdity of prioritizing amphibians over human needs.

We can no longer tolerate housing construction being obstructed in the city due to incomprehensible nature preservation regulations.

The Senate aims to expedite housing construction. Building Senator Gaebler (SPD) plans to confront the powerful nature conservation organizations with a "faster construction law." Gaebler states, "Experience has shown that species protection is abused to delay or prevent."

In response, the associations have already vowed to challenge the law.
