Tips on Extending the Lifespan of Your Kitchen Appliances

Equipping Your Kitchen: An Informal Guide to Choosing Kitchen Tools

This series is here to help you pick the right small appliances for your kitchen and get rid of the unnecessary ones.

Kitchen appliances, like purchasing a brand new refrigerator or stove, can cost a significant amount. You expect these items to last for many years, but is that a viable expectation? The last thing you want is to spend thousands on an appliance only to need a new one in just a few years. In this guide, you'll learn about the lifespan of various kitchen appliances and what factors influence their durability.

My most recent trip to Bangkok left me with a deep understanding of sustainability. I noticed that their appliances, vehicles, and carts were all much older than the ones in the U.S, but they were still functional since their parts had been replaced, and the machines were well-maintained. This got me thinking about how things used to be made with durability in mind in the U.S and how that has changed over the years.

I spoke with the Repair Association via email and learned that, based on data from the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM), the average lifespan of large appliances used to be 20 years, but it has now decreased to 12. This decline in lifespan is largely due to the integration of computer electronics into appliances' systems, which can lead to significant issues if anything goes wrong.

Computer chips are now present in everyday appliances like refrigerators and stoves. One common issue with "smart" appliances is glitchy software that makes repairs difficult. Some companies may only offer specialized equipment to repair these appliances, limiting your options and potentially making it easier for you to just purchase a new one. For example, if you have a smart fridge with a malfunctioning computer system, repairing it may involve dealing with copyright or warranty issues because of the software's complexity.

This issue is more pronounced with smaller appliances like coffee makers, blenders, and stand mixers. Some manufacturers provide replacement parts, while others do not. The absence of certain parts can cause an entire appliance to become unusable, leading to an unexpected need for a new one.

What to Consider When Buying New Appliances

If you've recently had an appliance break down, consider yourself lucky. This is the perfect opportunity to invest in a high-quality, long-lasting appliance. Here's what you should ask yourself and the appliance manufacturers to ensure you get the most out of your new purchase.

Can You Get Replacement Parts?

Look on the manufacturer's website to see if replacement parts are available. Companies that are transparent about repairs and parts should have a dedicated service and repairs section on their website. KitchenAid, for example, has a self-repair page and a replacement parts page. If you can't find much besides simple accessories, call the company to get more information. If they don't have the necessary parts, consider looking at other brands.

How Much Does the Appliance Rely on Computer Software?

If you're considering an appliance that uses Wi-Fi or other computer components, find out if there's an authorized repair facility near you. They will be more likely to help you with any issues related to the electronics. It's also worth contacting the maker to inquire about their policy on software issues and updates before making a purchase.

Are Cleaning Kits Offered?

Regular cleaning and maintenance can significantly extend an appliance's life. Check if the manufacturer offers cleaning kits for their products. Some brands, like GE, even have sets of brushes specifically designed to clean coils, filters, vents, and more. If the company doesn't provide these kits or offer clear cleaning instructions, check out Reddit to see if others have had any luck with alternative solutions.

Incorporating newer technology doesn't automatically mean your appliances will break down prematurely. There are many factors that contribute to how much wear your appliances will experience over time. However, arming yourself with knowledge and considering factors like replacement parts, software reliance, and cleaning kits will ensure that you're as prepared as possible for any potential maintenance needs.
