Tipico supports ARD-Sportschau
Sportschau im Ersten (ARD) has acquired online sports betting provider Tipico (Malta) as a sponsor for the upcoming 2021/22 Bundesliga season. Both parties view this partnership as mutually beneficial during a global pandemic. Also, a deal was struck with the beer brand Krombacher. These partnerships are handled by ARD-Werbung SALES & SERVICES GmbH. What are the specifics of their agreements?
Increased TV Presence for Tipico
The renowned bookmaker Tipico has become a sponsor of the sports program "Sportschau im Ersten," as announced by ARD-Werbung SALES & SERVICES GmbH, which also sealed a deal with Krombacher. These partnerships are tied to the forthcoming Bundesliga soccer season, set to start on August 13, 2021. Sportschau is known as an eminent authority on high-caliber sports, particularly in soccer news.
Approximately 4.8 million viewers watch this program on average, while a staggering 40 million enjoy its reach. During the last Bundesliga season, 6.8 million people tuned in every Saturday. Head of Sportschau, Uwe Esser, asserts that the program has thrived under challenging circumstances, including the coronavirus pandemic. For many sports enthusiasts, it represents a comforting routine offering a sense of normalcy. This resilience and reliability is also unusual in the advertising arena.
Krombacher's Marketing Director Uwe Riehs endorses Sportschau's long-standing tradition on the TV channel Erste. The company is elated by the expanding presence of its brand on German television.
Marlon van der Goes, marketing leader at Tipico, characterizes the Tipico brand as embodying the essence of sports betting, encompassing passion, progress, and excitement. Bundesliga matches represent their core offering. As an official partner of the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 and FC Bayern Munich, they consider their upcoming association with Sportschau a logical and desired move. ARD-Werbung SALES & SERVICES GmbH's extensive quality portfolio caters to exclusive target groups with high spending power, both nationally and regionally.
Tipico's Presence in Germany's Betting Market
The partnership between Tipico and Sportschau coincided with the implementation of the new State Treaty on Gambling (GlüStV). In July, the treaty regulated online casinos, online sports betting, and online poker. While transitional rules for casinos commenced back in October 2020, betting providers like Tipico were tolerated since 2019.
Since then, legal online sports betting became accessible on a national scale, allowing providers to offer services on events such as Bundesliga matches or Formula 1. Tipico was among the first recipients of an official German betting license under the updated criteria, granted in late October. A total of 15 licenses were issued. The Hessian Minister of Interior, Peter Beuth (CDU), observed a historic shift in the gambling industry.
Established in 2004 by Germans Oliver Voigt, Dieter Pawlik, and Mladen Pavlovic, Tipico is a highly successful betting company. Besides online sports betting, it operates a franchise of over 1,250 sports betting outlets in Germany and Austria. Over 6,000 employees across 57 countries work for this operator. As the leader in sports betting in Germany with a market share exceeding 50 percent, Tipico ranks sixth in the global betting industry. Its ever-growing fame stems from partnerships with German soccer powerhouse FC Bayern Munich as well as its advertisements featuring legendary goalkeeper Oliver Kahn.
Tipico's Voluntary Disclosures Linked to Tax Fraud
In May, Tipico made some voluntary disclosures due to earlier involvement in aiding and abetting tax fraud. According to reports by the news platform Business Insider, certain commission payments to betting brokers were evaded by the German tax authorities between 2007 and 2012. This accounted for 20.4 million euros, funneled to Croatian accounts.
Business Insider referenced an internal investigation report from 2016: the report suggests that Tipico acknowledged in 2013 that Croatian authorities had probed the Maltese FIAU (Financial Intelligence Analysis Unit) on tax irregularities. These investigations concerned commission payments from Malta to Croatia. Tax liabilities were allegedly due for the betting brokers who received the payments. However, the company has yet to comment on these circumstances.
