Thunder's Chet Holmgren becomes favorite to win NBA Rookie of the Year award

Oklahoma City Thunder center Chet Holmgren beats out Victor Wembanyama (+120) to become the new betting favorite (-155 odds) to win the NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

Holmgren, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft out of Gonzaga, suffered a foot injury during a pro-am game in Seattle before the start of the preseason. Since he did not participate in any regular games in the 2022/23 season, he retained his rookie status at the beginning of this season.

Holmgren started the season ranked No. 2 on DraftKings’ NBA awards list with -155 Rookie of the Year odds.

Wembanyama, a teenage prospect from France, is DraftKings' -225 preseason favorite to win NBA Rookie of the Year. The San Antonio Spurs selected the 7-foot-4 prodigy with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft.

Chet Holmgren (Thunder)-155

Holmgren is a key starter for the young Thunder (18-9), which currently sits third in the Western Conference. The rookie center is the Thunder's third-leading scorer behind All-Star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (30.8 points per game) and second-year forward Jalen Williams (17.4 points per game).

Holmgren averaged 17.2 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and 2.4 assists per game. He shot 52.6 percent from the field, including 36.9 percent from three-point range. He has performed consistently, scoring 10 double-doubles in 27 games this season.

Holmgren has two points this season, including 33 points against the Philadelphia 76ers. Holmgren had an impressive performance against reigning MVP Joel Embiid.

In November, Holmgren scored a career-high 36 points in an overtime win over the Golden State Warriors. This clutch performance caught the attention of NBA bettors.

Victor Wembanyama (Tottenham Hotspur) +120

Wembunyama is averaging more points (18.5), rebounds (10.7) and blocks (3.0) than Holmgren, but he's the best player on a very bad team. The Spurs (4-24) have been one of the worst teams in the Western Conference this season, which has negatively impacted their Rookie of the Year odds.

If the Detroit Pistons hadn't suffered one of the worst losses in NBA history, the Spurs would have been the worst team in the NBA this season. The Spurs have suffered a 17-game losing streak and are currently in the midst of a four-game losing streak.

Wembanyama has performed well in the first 25 games of the season. He's been completely dominant in some moments, including a 38-point performance against the Phoenix Suns in November.

Wembanyama had 30 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks in a mid-December loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

With more than two-thirds of the season left, Wembanyama still has plenty of time to impress voters.

Jaime Jax (Heat) +3000

If you're looking for a value bet, keep an eye on Miami Heat rookie Jaime Jax. Jax is third in NBA honors and has +3000 odds to win Rookie of the Year.

The Heat selected Jaquez with the 18th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. The UCLA swingman led the Bruins to the Final Four in the 2022 March Madness college basketball tournament. But he impressed the Heat front office with his defense and ability to create his own shot.

The Heat (18-12) are the defending Eastern Conference champions and currently ranked fifth in the Eastern Conference.

As a rotation player for the Heat, Jax averaged 13.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. He shot 51.6 percent from the field and 38 percent from three.

Jax saved one of his best games on Christmas Day in a win over the Sixers. He scored a game-high 31 points for the Heat and directed much of the offense while All-Star Jimmy Butler was sidelined with a calf injury.

It’s great to get a win on Christmas Day and have a career night," Jaquez said."I grew up watching these games, to play and have a career night. Night, I just have to get back to working hard and spending long nights in the gym to prepare for moments like this. "

Jaquez gained head coach Erik Spoelstra's trust early and began the season as a key member of the second unit. He also started seven games when Tyler Herro was sidelined with an ankle injury.
