Ulm's Iconic Cathedral - Those who visit the world's tallest church tower can ascend it once more.
Price tag to tour the planet's tallest church tower soars again: following twenty months of reconstruction, the topmost level of Ulm's cathedral's lofty platform now is back in service since Wednesday. Before, it was shut off at 70 meters. Details remain undecided when the tower will ultimately reopen at 143 meters.
At an impressive 161.53 meters high, the cathedral clocks in as Earth's highest church spire. Laid down in '77 AD was this colossal Protestant church's foundation stone.
"The vista from 102 meters is remarkable," muses Iris Ettrich, Head of Guest Services, beaming. Ulm's Merchant Mayor, Martin Ansbacher (SPD), declares joy as his city's marked landmark, the Ulm Cathedral, can reignite with tourist traffic after the drawn-out refurbishing stage.
A series of challenges, Ettrich acknowledges, came with the renovation, with the most laborious effort being repair on the steps. "Many of them were roughed up," she shares. They either had to receive a refresh or be traded out entirely. "If one nail is displaced," Ettrich explains, "it's a structural invitation to chaos." Handrails also have been added for the safety of visitors.
Ultimately, more work is planned for when the tower will beam back open at 143 meters. "More staircases need servicing," Ettrich reveals. Although main work lies ahead, it's not all that's in store.
