Thomas Hofmann victorious in the WPTDeepStacks Berlin tournament.

The World Poker Tour event, WPTDeepStacks Berlin 2019, has come to an end with a big win for Swiss poker player, Thomas Hofmann, netting him €115,230. WPTDeepStacks Berlin 2019 took place over six days (January 8-14) at Spielbank Berlin, and here's a recap of the major happenings.

Hofmann, a telecommunications engineer by profession hailing from Switzerland, emerged as the winner of the No-Limit Hold'em tournament's €1,100+100 Main Event. Facing 27 other finalists, he defeated the Lithuanian Eldaras Rafijeva in an intense showdown. In a battle spanning over an hour, Hofmann eventually took the lead in the final decisions. In the final showdown, Rafijeva was all-in with 3-3, but Hofmann overshadowed him, drawing an ace on the flop and eliminating Rafijeva. Celebrating his 15th tournament victory, the elated Hofmann expressed his satisfaction, stating that he wanted to return to Spielbank Berlin.

Hofmann walked away with the highest prize money ever in his live poker career, €115,230. He also received a €2,000 end-of-season ticket. Meanwhile, Rafijeva settled for €100,000 as the runner-up.

The DeepStacks tournament format by WPT first made its debut in Berlin in 2018. It's a satellite tournament, with a buy-in ranging between €66 and €2,200. In 2018, Dustin Mangold, an unknown live poker scene player at the time, took home €130,000 in prize money. This time around, with 645 participants from 39 countries, the prize pool skyrocketed to €688,215, surpassing the €500,000 guaranteed prize pool. Brümmer, the Managing Director of Spielbank Berlin, remarked on the event's success:

"It was an absolute pleasure to host one of Europe's most significant poker tournaments again this year. Berlin is rapidly becoming known as the poker capital, and we're honored to offer poker enthusiasts a premier setting in the heart of the city."

Given the success of the tournament, Brümmer also stressed the ongoing partnership's relevance to Berlin's future: "A diverse program that provides an exciting and unforgettable experience is what we've created together, which benefits the city's cosmopolitan image with its 3.6 million residents."

The tournament drew not only amateur players but also several well-known poker professionals, like Poland's Wojciech Wyrebski from 2018's Colossus WSOP-Europe, who placed 7th, or the Romanian Alecandru Cinca, who has over €170,000 in career winnings. Previously, he finished second at the Hyper Turbo event on the European Poker Tour in Barcelona in 2018, taking home €44,100. Lastly, Sebastian Trisch placed 4th, having earned €100,000 from his past achievements. However, it was Hofmann who stole the show—his notoriety includes over €800,000 in winnings. He made headlines in 2017 with his 2nd place finish in the "Little One for One Drop" tournament at WSOP Europe, winning €105,532.

These professionals and more were featured at the tournament tables across the six-day event in Germany's vibrant capital.
