Prior to conducting chemical experiments - Thirteen people sustained injuries after a chemical irritant was released at school.
At a school in Tostedt near Hamburg, officials were emergency called on Monday.
As students were making their way back to their classrooms, their eyes suddenly stung badly. Several students cried out in pain, panic ensued - emergency call! It was later discovered that an unknown individual had secretly sprayed pepper spray.
13 children injured
Multiple ambulances rushed to the school's center. Medical professionals evaluated the youngsters (ranging in age from 11-16 years old), and recorded their respiratory distress. 13 students sustained injuries, while 4 had to be hospitalized.
The fire department responded with firefighters in heavy-duty breathing gear to clear the school hallway.
Police spokesman Jan Krüger: "We launched an investigation for dangerous bodily harm and conducted preliminary interviews. There was an unsuccessful search for a potentially used animal repellent spray on the school grounds."
Possible return of serial offenders?
On April 9 and April 11, there had already been incidents at the Oberstufenzentrum, where two separate instances of irritant gas attacks occurred with a grand total of seven students injured. No perpetrator was caught.
Police spokesman Krüger: "We are now exploring if there's any connection between these events."
The criminal investigation department is looking for information on any suspicious individuals in the school grounds area around noon. Contact them at 04182-404270.
