Moving up to the 3rd division - These regional teams have been elevated to higher leagues.
Get ready for professional soccer!
Did you know? In German soccer, there are five regional leagues (West, Southwest, Northeast, North, and Bavaria). Out of these, only three regional league clubs are directly promoted to the 3rd division since there are only four promotion places. The champions of the Regionalliga Bayern and Regionalliga Nord will have to play in the promotion relegation this year, where they'll compete for the last spot in the 3rd division.
An intriguing fact: The last promotion spot is determined yearly between clubs from the Northeast, North, or Bavarian regional leagues. The West and Southwest regional leagues have had a direct promotion place since 2021.
Regional League West
► Alemannia Aachen
Making a comeback to professional soccer, Alemannia Aachen is celebrating after winning the championship. With Aachen leading the table well ahead of 1. FC Bocholt and Wuppertaler SV, they're set for promotion. Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt (50) congratulated the traditional club: "Congratulations, Alemannia. Wishing you success in the 3rd division and taking on the challenges that lie ahead." Schmidt used to play for Alemannia Aachen himself from 1998 to 2003.
Regionalliga Southwest
Stuttgart Kickers
In Southwest Germany, two teams are in a tight race for promotion. Stuttgarter Kickers are currently in the lead, and they'll enter the final matchday with a one-point advantage over VfB Stuttgart U21.
Regionalliga Nordost
Energie Cottbus
In the Nordost Regionalliga, no clear promotion candidate has yet emerged. As it stands now, Energie Cottbus holds the 3rd division spot with 68 points and a goal difference of 29, but Greifswalder FC (65 points, goal difference of 32) keeps breathing down their necks.
Promotion relegation between Regionalliga Nord and Bayern
This year's promotion relegation match will see Hannover 96 II and Würzburger Kickers face off against each other! Hannover celebrated their championship with an impressive 5:0, securing their spot in the promotion play-offs.
How are the promotion play-offs progressing?
Hannover 96 II and Würzburger Kickers will clash in a first and second leg. If points and goals end up being equal by the second leg, the away goals rule will come into play. If the teams are still tied after both matches, there'll be extra time, followed by a penalty shoot-out.
The dates for these major matches are May 29 and June 2. The second leg on June 2 will take place in Hanover.
