International Ice Hockey Competition - These playing cards must succeed!

German ice hockey continues to make a name for itself on the international stage. Having placed second during the previous year's World Championships, national coach Harold Kreis' (65) squad is once again competing for a medal in this year's tournament held in the Czech Republic and has managed to reach the quarterfinals. This Thursday (4:20 p.m.) on ProSieben, MagentaSport, and Deutschland.TV, they'll take on our favorite opponents, Switzerland. Here's what sets the German team apart heading into their match against the Swiss:

Philipp Grubauer (32), a standout goaltender who plays for the Seattle Kraken in the NHL, is a key player for the German team. His performance is particularly crucial during crucial matches, such as those against top-notch players like Swiss star Kevin Fiala (27, Los Angeles Kings).

Kai Wissmann (27), a defenseman for the Eisbären Berlin, delivers strong offenses with forward instincts. He showcased this in the 8:1 win against Latvia, where he outplayed four Latvians and scored. Wissmann reminisces, "I first played as a forward in the junior ranks before moving to defense in Berlin." Kreis, the national coach, agrees, stating, "Kai is a remarkable ice hockey player with a fantastic field of vision."

The team leader and face-off king

Nico Sturm (29), a San Jose Sharks player who's known for his exceptional prowess in the face-off circle, is a crucial member of the dressing room and the ice. With more than 50 percent of face-off wins, Sturm's leadership qualities are unmatched. Kreis comments, "Nico is a consummate professional." Sturm himself says, "I hope I can instill confidence in my teammates." The seasoned NHL professional is recognized as a two-way forward. This means he excels in both defense and offense. Fellow NHL player and teammate JJ Peterka (22, Buffalo Sabres) endorses: "You can always tell when the pressure is on, and Nico is on the ice – he'll make the correct decision."

The fearless fighter

JJ Peterka (r.) has already scored five goals at the World Cup

Yasin Ehliz (31), a player for EHC RB Munich, radiates enthusiasm in every situation. His standout performance against the Swedish team was indicative of how well he performs under pressure (1:6). Ehliz was our best player in that match. He contends for every puck and is invaluable to the team when they're outnumbered or outplayed. As a skillful ice fighter, Ehliz thrives in high-stakes battles. Paired with Mannheim's newcomer Marc Michaelis and former Berlin player Leo Pföderl, their forward line remains the most impressive in the entire German squad. Former national coach Hans Zach (75) applauds, "A top-tier ice hockey player hailing from the Bad Tölz school and a genuinely exceptional individual."

The aggressor

While he's not a fan of media attention, he lets his performance speak for itself. Leo Pföderl (30), an Eisbären Berlin forward, has scored in every game so far at the World Championships (goal or assist). He amassed four goals during the DEL final against Bremerhaven, clinching the championship title for the Eisbären. At this tournament, Pföderl has demonstrated his potent scoring instincts. He's unmatched in terms of substance during every move he makes on the ice. Every coach desires a player with his characteristics. Pföderl explains, "Berlin holds a special place for me in terms of the city, the club, and the coach."

The seasoned tournament participant

John-Jason Peterka (22), voted the best forward in last year's World Championship, may have experienced some initial hurdles in Ostrava, but has now found his groove. In the latest tournament, he's displaying his speed and remarkable scoring potential. Peterka's impressive display in the NHL, where he racked up 28 goals, illustrates his high standards for himself. With his massive scoring threat and his ability to engage in physical duels, he's a force to be reckoned with during their match against Switzerland.
