International Ice Hockey Tournament - The youth envisions winning a medal today.
31-year-old Yasin Ehliz scored three points in the initial win against Slovakia (6:4). In the 1:6 defeat in the second group game against the USA, he was responsible for the third goal, earning him the title of best player. Achieving four points in two World Cup games is commendable.
Born in Bad Tölz, his hockey journey began with the Young Lions. As a child, he encountered Hans Zach (75), a man who had a keen interest in young ice hockey players. Zach was always kind to young athletes.
The "Alpine volcano," also hailing from the 20,000-inhabitant town in Bavaria, shared his thoughts: "Yasin's a fantastic player from the Tölz school. A genuine gentleman, which is why people here adore him. I'm thrilled about him and the entire team. Lenz Funk senior, who left us far too early, played a significant role in Yasin's development." When Yasin was a young member of the Tölzer Löwen, he often worked overtime after regular training at Tölzer Eisstadion with his current teammate Leo Pföderl and the 1976 bronze medalist Lenz Funk.
Ehliz retains a strong connection to his hometown. Not only is the delicious food from his mother Semral a reminder, but her family also watched the games together while they were in Ostrava over the weekend.
Semral revealed, "Asparagus is Yasin's favorite food."
Yasin's dream of playing in the NHL remained unfulfilled. He was signed by the Calgary Flames after the 2028 Olympics, but was promptly sent to Stockton in the minor-league AHL. He stayed for just two months before heading back to Bavaria. In spite of his solid performance, coaches there opted not to call him up, instead preferring other players. Moreover, there were communication issues. It just wasn't working out. However, the experience gained was pivotal for Yasin, who is now a proficient forward. Later in 2023, Yasin clinched the German championship with EHC Red Bull Munich.
Could Yasin win a medal at the World Cup next?
