Prior to the 5th year memorial of his passing - The von Lübcke family urges politicians to remain resolute.

The grieving family of slain CDU politician Walter Lübcke has issued a plea to politically active individuals not to back down in the face of intimidation before the upcoming fifth anniversary of his death.

"Given that the Lübcke family has personally witnessed how language can morph into physical actions, they find the present assaults on politicians - be it through online threats or real-world attacks - deeply distressing," they emphasized through a spokesperson at the request of the German Press Agency. The family explicitly aimed to bolster the courage of anyone affected and those who champion our democracy, urging them not to yield to the assaults. "Hold strong, remain steadfast in your beliefs and principles, and you are not alone," she emphatically stressed while demanding enhanced security for those engaged in politics.

"We understand that interpersonal interactions between politicians and the general public are integral to a liberal democracy - Walter Lübcke consistently strived for engagement with the masses, not just during election periods," the family explained. While it's unfeasible to preclude all misdeeds, they asserted that significantly more must be done to safeguard both full-time and honorary politicians and elected representatives. "The family has firsthand knowledge of the ramifications when protective measures are utterly absent."

They also weathered cyberassaults in addition to their husband and father's murder. "Cyberattacks and online threats of this magnitude should be reported directly by the victims themselves. It's the constitutional state's responsibility to take decisive action against the culprits, to swiftly and arduously investigate, and to impose appropriate retribution upon them."

Lübcke fell victim to a right-wing extremist, Stephan E., on June 2, 2019, who fatally shot him in close range on his Wolfhagen-Istha patio in northern Hesse. The culprit's motivation? Disapproval of the politician's liberal view on refugee matters. Currently incarcerated for life, E.'s this crime is the bravest political slaying of a German politician by a neo-Nazi since the Second World War.
