The Vegas Strip may soon be without Casino Royale.

The famous Casino Royale, a landmark on the Las Vegas Strip since 1964, could soon be torn down to make way for a 699-foot tower. The casino hotel's owners recently obtained approval from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to start building the new structure in its place.

This news was shared by the popular blogger Scott Roeben, known as Vital Vegas, who posted an excerpt from a July 21st, 2023, letter containing the FAA's approval of the project. The aeronautical study concluded that the proposed tower wouldn't have any significant impact on the use of the airspace by planes or on the functioning of air navigation facilities.

The casino's owners have a deadline to complete the construction by January 21st, 2025, or else their approval from the FAA will expire.

Additionally, Roeben reported that the restaurant Outback Steakhouse, located within the Casino Royale, is set to close, while employees at the casino were not informed of any impending closure.

Historic Hotel

The Casino Royale initially opened as the 164-room Caravan Motor Hotel in 1964, situated between the Flamingo and Desert Inn (now Wynn Las Vegas) on the east side of Las Vegas Boulevard. It later transformed into the Nob Hill Casino in 1978, featuring a 10,000-square-foot gaming floor with 225 slot machines and four table games.

Two years later, the Elardi family acquired the property for $17 million, merging it with the nearby casino to create the Casino Royale. The newly upgraded casino reopened with a 10,000-foot gaming floor, offering 225 slots and 4 table games.

In 2012, the Casino Royale became part of the Best Western chain.

Although approved projects on the Strip don't always reach completion, there's a relevant example at the Casino Royale.

In 1994, the Elardi family had plans for another construction project that received multiple approvals before eventually facing stalling. This project involved a space probe amusement ride, which met resistance from various sources, including the formidable Culinary Union and the neighboring resorts, who disagreed with its compatibility with the Strip.
