Lukas Kälble participates in the Ice Hockey World Championship. - The unexpected defender emerged out of thin air.
Full of excitement, German defenseman Lukas Kälble (26) made his way through the media zone after their 6:4 triumph at the Ice Hockey World Championship in Ostrava. The young defender had to stop at every journalist. This must have been a new experience for him considering the amount of media interest he had received. His crucial goal with the 3:2 was instrumental in their win, "All I was thinking at that moment was to get the puck towards the goalpost. Then I saw the puck fly into the top right corner." Talent and determination were the winning factors.
Together with Fabio Wagner, he played a great game. Not all defenders in the German team exhibited that level of performance. With the tournament still in its early stages, there's certainly room for improvement.
Lukas Kälble, who? Many journalists in attendance might have wondered about him. His stint in the North American WCHL league was only a year ago. He rose to prominence last season in Bremerhaven, where they are the runners-up.
In Bremerhaven, Lukas was instantly given a major role in the team and loved by the fans. His next destination is Mannheim in the summer. Apart from his connection to the junior team in Mannheim, the money certainly had its appeal too. Although it remains uncertain if it will equal that of his fellow national team member Marc Michaelis (estimated net worth: 300,000 euros), Prey remains optimistic: "Lukas is always welcome here."
After their opening victory, Kälble commented, "I hope someone collected the puck from my first World Cup goal."
By the way: forwards Maxi Kastner (Munich) and Colin Ugbekile (Iserlohn) have been awarded their licenses today.
