The Thai House of Representatives Creates a Committee for Casinos

The Thai Parliament has recently decided to establish a new 60-member committee to analyze the potential of casino gaming in the nation. This committee differs from a previous one, which explored the feasibility of integrated resorts in the country. The new parliamentary group's objectives are broader and include studying methods to strengthen the Thai economy through approved entertainment venues and regulated gaming centers, as well as tackling illegal casinos.

The Pheu Thai Party's representative, Srettha Thavisin, is Thailand's current prime minister. Members from various political groups, including the Pheu Thai Party, have supported the committee's establishment. The committee's agenda includes a 90-day deadline.

It's been a decade since the "Ad-hoc Committee on the Consideration of the Opening of Entertainment Complex, the Collection of Revenue and Taxes from the Legal Casino, the Prevention and the Solution of Illegal Gambling, the Widespread of Electric Gambling Machines, and the Online Gambling" made a recommendation to amend Thailand's stance on casinos.

The Future of Thailand's Casino Industry

Although Thailand doesn't boast the sophisticated gaming infrastructure found in other major Asia-Pacific countries such as Macau, the Philippines, Singapore, and South Korea, it seems open to the prospect of integrated resorts. In 2021, lawmakers hinted that casino gaming might move a step closer to reality.

Several committees were formed to examine various casino-related topics, including tax collection, location selection, investment attraction, operations, and the impact on local populations.

The United Thai Nation Party MP (Member of Parliament), Chatchawal Kong-udom, has expressed interest in establishing five entertainment districts, possibly containing casino resorts, across the country. Considering its high popularity with international tourists, Thailand is an attractive destination for global gaming operators. Politicians may also be more inclined to implement regulated casinos to increase government revenue and keep Thai gamblers from traveling to other gaming hotspots in the region.

Potential Casino Operators in Thailand

The approval and establishment of casinos in Thailand are not yet certain. However, if this occurs, it could draw interest from some of the gaming industry's biggest players. Las Vegas Sands, Galaxy Entertainment, and MGM Resorts International are all said to be considering the possibility, having already set up operations in the region. Furthermore, Genting, Melco Resorts & Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts are also considered potential contenders, though they haven't publicly announced their intentions.

So, the upcoming committee will be monitoring the potential of casino resorts in Thailand, with a primary focus on the economy, entertainment, and the fight against illegal casinos. It has 90 days to complete its duties. The committee's suggestions could pave the way for the gambling and entertainment industry in Thailand, with the aim of luring in global gaming operators with attractive business opportunities.
