Overview of Tropicana Casino Resort
The Tropicana is one of the oldest and renowned casino resorts in the gambling hub of Las Vegas. The resort was built on land owned by late Miami hotelier Ben Jaffe.
The grand opening occurred on April 4, 1957, with a total construction cost of $15 million (€13.9 million), making it the priciest resort on the Las Vegas Strip at that time.
The Tropicana also played a role in the rise of the mafia in Las Vegas. The resort's then-owner, Frank Costello, was severely wounded by rival mafia boss Vito Genovese in New York in 1957.
The Tropicana gained further notoriety through Elvis Presley's music video for 'Viva Las Vegas'. However, financial struggles began as early as the 1970s due to the emergence of larger and more modern resorts, causing the Tropicana to lose its pioneering status in Las Vegas's gambling scene.
Tropicana Shutdown Affects Around 500 Employees
Approximately 500 employees of the resort will also be affected by the Tropicana's closure. The casino is obliged to shut down around a year prior to the commencement of the new stadium's construction. Arik Knowles, Vice President and General Manager of the Tropicana, shared his thoughts on this:
This is a significant opportunity for the company, but it's also bittersweet, as it means that operations at the Tropicana Las Vegas will be suspended for renovations.– Arik Knowles, Vice President and General Manager of the Tropicana, San Francisco Chronicle**
The new Oakland Athletics stadium will accommodate a seating capacity of 33,000 spectators. The construction will necessitate a 9-hectare area.
The closing of Tropicana Casino Resort in April 2024 will undoubtedly be a topic of interest for many, as it marks the end of operations at one of the oldest and most renowned casinos in the news-worthy gambling hub of Las Vegas.
With the shutdown of Tropicana, around 500 employees will be affected, a necessary step to make way for the construction of the new Oakland Athletics baseball stadium scheduled for 2025.
