Farming - The rapeseed crop is doing well, with the harvest set to begin in mid-July.

Northeastern farmers are pleased with their rapeseed fields' conditions. After a good recovery from winter, the plants had minimal to no damage during the brief frost in April and even thrived from the constant rainfall in numerous areas, as per the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Farmers' Association. The extended rapeseed flowering period was also favorable. With a two-week head start, flowering started early in 2024 and continued for a long time because of a relatively cool season.

"This elongated the period for bee pollination, which was profitable for pod formation," said an association representative. A longer flowering period is advantageous for farmers since it provides more time for insects like bees to pollinate and contributes to a high yield.

The rapeseed harvest is predicted to begin in mid-July. This crop, a member of the cabbage family, fully ripens when the flowers transform into seed-containing pods.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, with its rapeseed acreage of approximately 188,000 hectares, is Germany's largest rapeseed-growing state in 2024. The country as a whole cultivates approximately 1.1 million hectares of rapeseed. In 2023, the harvest in MV yielded 38.1 decitonnes per hectare. This year's projection is similar: "We anticipate a rapeseed yield of between 30 and 40 decitonnes per hectare, and we hope for a harvest at the higher end of this spectrum," the representative concluded.
